Digital Preservation
Digital preservation (also known as substitute archiving) is the fundamental building block to achieve a complete dematerialization. It is in fact the legal/IT process, regulated by the Italian law, which allows to attribute to digital documents the same legal value as paper documents.
The storage system guarantees authenticity, integrity, reliability, readability and availability of electronic documents, as required by the CAD (article 44).
AgID (Agency for the Digitalization of Italy) defines the operational arrangements for the conservation activities. This is the nature and function of the system definition, organizational models, roles and functions of the parties involved, description of the process.

How to adopt it and why
To digitally preserve means replacing paper documents with the equivalent document in digital format that is “suspended” in the form, content and time through digital signature and time stamp.
It is indeed the digital signature technology that allows you to give the authorship and make unchangeable an electronic document, then accompanied by timestamps that can be dated with the certainty of the digital document produced.
This type of process allows to confer the same legal effect as paper documents to electronic ones and allows companies and governments to save money on printing costs, storage and paper filing. A large saving if you consider the documentation that must be, by law, preserved for several years.
