Migration and upgrade
When the customer decides that the time has come to upgrade the system to a new release or to migrate the system to a new technical infrastructure, qualified consulting and planning is needed to carry out the operations needed to assure the least disruption of service possible.
The purpose of the Installation and Upgrade Service is to provide the necessary on-site technical and consulting support and to activate the specific Siav procedures for this particular type of activity. Planning a release upgrade or migrating the system to a new technical infrastructure are often very complicated activities, especially in the presence of large installations or extensive system integrations. Many variables can come into play and cause problems. For this reason, careful and accurate planning guarantees the least disruption of service possible for the customer.
Normally, the activity requires a series of phases to eliminate every foreseeable cause of problems:
- Preparing an accurate Migration Plan (PM) and documenting it (agreed to with the customer).
- Verifying the PM in a test environment and planning for the production environment.
- Verifying the Disaster Recovery procedures and final check list.
- Executing the migration/upgrade activities. Beforehand, a team of specialists is alerted to be ready to act promptly in case of problems.
- Providing assistance during the monitoring period and resolving any anomalies that emerge.
- Drafting the Closeout Report (VC) or the Action Report.
The migration/upgrade procedures provide for testing the Disaster Recovery procedure beforehand so as to ensure that the system can be reset to its pre-migration state if necessary.
